It is widely grown in warm regions as a street tree and an ornamental tree in parks and yards. Hardy in zones 9-12. The Sylvester Date Palm Tree, also known as the Silver Date Palm or Wild Date Palm, is one of the most beautiful of all palm tree varieties. It is a fast growing palm that can get up to 40-50ft tall and 25ft wide. It works great as an accent palm that blends well into many landscape themes. The trunks are robust and the canopies average 18 across at maturity. Sylvestris are all grown from seed and so its normal to see some variations in appearance across a group. It has a lot of similar characteristics with True Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera). It has a solitary robust trunk, with an interesting diamond pattern created by leaf scars. The Sylvester Date Palm requires some maintenance trimming old dead leaves that tend to make skirt. The trees trunk is swollen at the base, about 13-18 inches in diameter. Silver Date Palm Tree Seed Germination Use a clean, sharp knife to strip thefruit flesh from the SILVER date palm seeds. Wash the stripped seeds undercool running water to remove all fruit particles. Soak the SILVER date seeds in a bowlor bucket of cool, clean water for at least 48 hours. Change the water forfresh each day and keep the seeds submerged. Discard any seeds that float tothe surface as they are not viable. Fill a nursery pot that is at least 6inches deep with a mixture of fresh sterile potting mix and peat moss. You wantthe planting medium to hold some water, as the seeds need to be always keptmoist. Bury the seed in the soil at a depthequal to its diameter. Hence, a 3/4-inch diameter seed would be buried 3/4 inchdown in the soil. Press the soil down gently over and around the seed to ensuregood seed to soil contact. Water the nursery pot until the soilis soaked with water and the excess water drains from the weeping holes at thebottom of the pot. Water the seed pot frequently enough to always keep it moist,never allowing even the surface of the soil to dry out. The seed will notgerminate in dry soil. Maintain these wet conditions until the seed germinates. Place the seed pot in a sunny orpartly shady location outdoors. If you will struggle to check the soil moisturedaily or every other day, shade may be a better option for you. Allow about 6 to 8 weeks or more forthe date seed to germinate and develop one or more green shoots. Allow up 5years for your date palm to reach maturity. If it is a female tree, it willbegin to bear date fruit of its own.
