As a child she lived in California, where she experienced poverty and racism. She returned to the Cherokee Nation in 1977 where her Activism began...starting with creating a Community water system and the rehabilitation of housing! Mankiller was elected Chief in 1987 and 4 years later re-elected. With Mankillers leadership her administration made improvements to their health care, educational systems, as well as their finances. Her tribe became a National Role Model. Chief Wilma Mankiller was a strong voice worldwide for Justice, Native people, and Women. WHAT A GREAT WOMAN!!! To top it off, Mankiller was inducted into the National Womans Hall of Fame in 1993, and in 1998 Chief Mankiller was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom (the highest civilian medal in U.S.).
