Description: Toggle harpoons are the foundation of any Eskimo artifact collection. Early hunters were known to carry dozens of specialized toggle harpoons in their hunting bag at any given time. The toggle was the business end of a complex harpoon weapon system which could be launched accurately and reliably, absorbing the crushing impact of contact with a large prey animal, penetrate and pivot under the thick hide and hold the animal fast. This complete Thule era specimen has great patina and a rather unique scalloped shoulder. Please look at my other Alaskan Artifacts.
