It is a great way to showcase your love for vintage items and Baltimore's industrial past. THIS SIGN is cast iron measuring 14 3/4” long and 4 3/4” wide. You can faintly see remnants of a silver finish. This has only been wiped down and not oiled or scrubbed. It is in great condition HISTORY: In the early 1900s Edward Renneburg of the Fells Point area of Baltimore invented a large machine for the industrial extraction of fish oil. There is a picture below of the actual machine. The machine that this plaque came from was located in an old fish processing house on the Albemarle Sound near the town of Edenton in North Carolina. Fish was removed from boats. The row was removed. The edible meat was removed. The rest went into this machine where steam heated the drum which broke down the fish and allowed the oils to be extracted. Further heating the remains dried it and produced fish meal and fertilizers. During the war they also produced potash used in the manufacture of gunpowder. The actual fish house has long since rotted away and fallen into the water. The metal equipment was scrapped. The Renneburg company in Baltimore closed in the mid 1980s and the property was turned into waterfront condos. All that’s remaining of the fish house is this cast iron metal plaque.
