Description: This is a beautiful and Fine Antique Old 19th c. Art Nouveau Social Realism Wedding Portrait Oil Painting on canvas, depicting a young bride to be, wearing an ornate 19th century Italian wedding veil, and looking longingly away from the viewer's gaze with a thoughtful expression. At the edges of the portrait are intricate Art Nouveau floral designs which appear to be on the wall behind her. This work does not appear to be signed, however an old provenance label on the verso reads: "Portrait of Elisabeth Webster Hill. Aunty Bess, Ned's Godmother. Painted by a New York artist friend whose name I have forgotten, in an Italian and a Florentine Christening veil which Ned, Robin, Roger and Betsy all worn and Ester wore for a wedding veil." Perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? They were clearly a very talented painter, and likely well known in New York. This piece likely dates from the 1890's - 1910's. Approximately 24 x 30 inches. Fair condition for over a century of age, and storage. This was obviously an important family heirloom, and has been kept up over the years, with a few replacement nails at the top of the canvas. However, this artwork has moderate speckles of paint loss throughout, a few small tears, scuffs and edge wear. This painting would be a lovely and worthy candidate for a minor restoration. Acquired from an old collection in Pasadena, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
