Description: "I am an Army deserter from the Army; I want to turn myself in.” Incarcerated, he proved to be a model prisoner. After many messages to Washington trying to verify his absence, word finally came through that he was not a deserter at all -- just out of work, hungry and needed a nice warm bed in the stockade during the winter. A SOLDIER’S LIFE AT FORT STEVENS, OREGON "Life was so good at Fort Stevens - one soldier actually broke in!” Folks, some of the hard to find old western's included history of the Forts of the U. S. Army which were started in 1863 and closed in 1947. This is the story entitled "A Soldier’s Life at Fort Stevens," by Ted Stokes. The author writes of this latter day Fort and what a soldier’s life was like. Personnel at Fort Stevens, Oregon, had served in such places as Tientsin and Tsingtao, China, Vladivostok, Russia, Chateau Thierry, France, Algeria, and military posts in Panama, Hawaii and the Philippines. Most of the troops were from Battery E., 3rd Coast Artillery. Two cute stories here sum up this great duty. During the cold of the winter, the supply train came in with a passenger. Stopped, he said, "I am an Army deserter from the Army; I want to turn myself in.” Incarcerated, he proved to be a model prisoner. After many messages to Washington trying to verify his absence, word finally came through that he was not a deserter at all -- just out of work, hungry and needed a nice warm bed in the stockade during the winter. Another great story, the guys adopted a dog, named him "pooch" and started taking care of him. The first Sergeant was a hardhearted sort and told them that if they were going to keep the dog, they would have to buy a collar and a license. So the guys started a collection box and pretty soon: "Pooch" was the richest ward of the U. S. Army.” Great story and one you will recognize immediately if you were brought up in that country. Look, there were many a western story published – the common ones about cowboy and Indians are listed on Ebay every day but the rarer ones like this about a soldier’s life at Fort Stevens are seldom found. Collectors treasure them and their price guide value rises every day. They are hard to find. I hunt them out cause really the better, untold and rarer stories were published in the rest. Here’s one of ‘em. Following my retirement, I have dedicated my remaining hours to indexing the Genealogy of our western pioneers. During my research, I discovered that thousands of our kinfolk lay unfound and unrecognized on some book dealer’s shelf gathering dust. Because Old Western History and Memorabilia was printed before computer indexing, I index every item I sell. This complete index will be bound and included in this offering at no additional cost. Humbly, I am trying to keep our history alive. I hope you appreciate the effort. A SOLDIER’S LIFE AT FORT STEVENS, OREGON By Ted Stokes Folks, sooner or later - Genealogists are going to realize that their family kinfolks are laying on some dealer's dusty shelves. If I can contribute to finding one little name or photo of that long lost ancestor you have been waiting to find, it's worth all the time I spend. As a tribute to the honor of our American Ancestors, Forefathers, Soldiers, and our Native American Indians, my indexed listings will include all names mentioned in the story from this time on. A SOLDIER’S LIFE AT FORT STEVENS, OREGON By Ted Stokes As you know, I specialize in finding old, rarely seen stories of American Pioneers. I sit on floors in old museums, libraries, antique stores, book places and read and read seeking those who braved our western frontier. ORIGINAL FORT STEVENS AREA MEMORABILIA IS RAPIDLY DISAPPEARING While others clip ads from magazines, I save history. It’s a shame that our past is being lost. It’s as simple as that. My wife kids me that after I find a piece I like, buy it, read it, research it, take a picture, scan it, write the blurb, pay the Ebay entry fee and commission, that I end up making about 50 cents an hour. But, OH HOW I LOVE THIS OLD WESTERN HISTORY. What a story, Rare Story!!! Great Pictures. You will love it as it was published in this old complete western magazine of many years ago. The issue is in good condition, the cover is in vibrant color. As clearly stated in my description, this is featured story in a rarely found and seldom read unusual and complete western magazine. I don't give out name of publication or date because I have caught competitors copying my index and work and trying to sell it as theirs. I hope you understand.
