Description: Lacebark Pine, Pinus bungeana, Tree Seeds Showy Bark, Evergreen, Wildlife Shelter, Shade Tree, Street Tree, Cold Tolerant, Bonsai Native to China, Lacebark Pine is a slow growing conifer which grows 30 to 50 feet tall. It features ornamental exfoliating bark which peels in round scales to reveal patches of pale yellow, which turn olive-brown, red and purple on exposure to light. Patience is required because it usually takes at least 10 years before the bark begins to exfoliate, though, younger trees may exhibit some mottling. It is most often seen as a spreading multi-trunked tree and can also be trained as a single trunk tree. Needles are medium to dark green, 2 to 4 inches long in bundles of three. Cones are small, yellowish-brown to 2 inches long. Lacebark Pine is grown as an ornamental plant in East Asian classical gardens where it symbolizes longevity. Leaf: Evergreen needles in fascicles of 3, up to 4 inches long, stiff and sharp, lustrous, yellow-green, persistent for 3 or 4 years. Flower: Species is monoecious; males cylindrical, yellowish in clusters, females yellow-green. Fruit: Cone, 2 to 3 inches long, egg-shaped, squat, light brown, armed with a small prickle. Twig: Grayish green, glabrous. Bark: Exfoliating in irregular plates, grayish green with irregular chalky white or brownish patches, very attractive. Form: Small tree up to 50 feet tall, pyramidal crown, often with many trunks.
