Description: PFV/Volland Co. Antique Framed Hand Colored Print 'Memories' PoemCirca 1908 or shortly after. 9.75" x 7.25" An exquisite hand colored illustration with a poem-- "MEMORIES" In beautiful antique condition. The colors are vibrant for its ageand do not seem to have faded.I have had it in a non-sun location for many years. There might be a tiny tear/flaw in the black painted section of the illustration. It is hard to tell what it is -- it is minuscule and does not detract from the image. I do not want to take the piece apart to examine it closer! Appears to be in original old frame(or at least framed shortly after purchasing),which is beautifully carved and gorgeously painted wood. The frame is in excellent condition, especially for its age. Please see Photos for detailed description and condition. The P.F. Volland Company was started in 1908 in Joliet, IL. Volland's first offerings were twenty hand colored mottos suitable for framing. Paul Volland was the first to use mottled and soft-shaded boards for his cards as well as the latest advances in offset printing techniques. Volland hired some of the industry’s best-known motto and verse writers such as Wilbur Nesbit, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Molly A. Haley, and Samuel Kiser.Paul Volland hired many of the most significant artists and writers of his time. Probably the most well-known Volland writer and illustrator is Johnny Gruelle, the creator of Raggedy Ann and Andy, some of whose first titles were published by Volland. Other illustrators and writers of note include Frederick Richardson, Janet Laura Scott, Maginel Wright Enright, John Rae, and Katherine Sturges Dodge. Items were hand colored.Ultimately, the actual demise of the P.F. Volland Company is a mystery. The Volland imprint permanently disappeared in the late 1950s.
