In the late fifties, a growing American economy fueled the need for larger, more powerful freight locomotives to transport the nation's goods and materials. One such locomotive was the GP18, built by the Electro0Motive division of General Motors. Between 1959 and 1963, 400 GP18's were manufactured, of which 350 were purchased by American railroads. The GP18 was a worthy successor to the GP7 and GP9, with the same basic body size and 1800 hp non-turbocharged engine. More importantly, it could be customized to offer railroads a variety of options depending on their services or locations. Among them were a choice of high or low nose configurations (depending on their visibility requirements); dynamic or non-dynamic brakes; specially winterized air ducts or larger fuel tanks. The GP18 was used for both freight and passenger service and ran throughout the country on the Rock Island (RI), Missouri Pacific (Mopac), Norfolk Southern (NS), Northern Pacific (NP), Seaboard (SAL), Toledo, Peoria & Western (TP&W), Boston & Maine (B&M), Lehigh Walley (LV), Norfolk & Western (N&W, Baltimore & Ohio (B&O), New York, Susquehanna & Western (NYS&W), Chicago & Northwestern (C&NW), Louisville & Nashville (L&N), Burlington Northern (BN), Nickel Plate Road (NKP) and Southern (SRR).
