Wire Handles, 1862-1887, Rare, Antique Gypsy Kettle Bean Pot Condition: This antique cast iron Gypsy kettle bean pot with a wire handle is marked S. & P. PHIL and 6 QTS. on the bottom. There is a clear and well defined 5.5” gate mark from the sand mold. This dates the pot 1862-1887. The pot has been cleaned and seasoned. It is intact with no cracks or breaks. The inside bottom has pitting, probably from the casting. No lid. The wire handle is in its original shape. This is a collectors piece, somewhat rare, and I would not recommend cooking in it. These 100-year-old-plus pots are quite light compared to contemporary pots. This one weighs just 5.5 pounds. The pot is 10.25 inches wide at the top. It sits 5.5 inches high. With the handle up it stands 11.75 inches high. The marks are stamped into the bottom: S. & P. PHIL and 6 QTS. There is a residual stamp of the top of a letter to the left of the S. - probably in error. The pot has a gently rounded bottom and is meant to be hung over a fire, or placed on the coals. S & P Co. of Philadelphia, PA short for Stuart & Peterson Co. was originally founded by William Penn Cresson, a prominent Quaker . It was located near North Broad and 13th In 1862 , the foundry became the Stuart & Peterson Co. ( also Quakers) or S & P as the wares were marked. The gatemark leads us to the production dates between 1862-1887. The company quickly gained a reputation for manufacturing top-notch cast iron cookware that stood the test of time. S&P Co.
