Description: Offered for auction here is the booklet entitled "Eastern Mandates". More commonly known as the Marshall Islands, this string of small islands lay between Midway Island and the Solomon Islands and was a strategic location from which to stage further invasions of Japanese-controlled territories. Under control of Germany from the late 1890s until the end of World War I, these islands were ceded to Japanese control by the League of Nations Charter. Over 90 islands were in the Marshalls chain. The operation lasted the first half of 1944. Japan had expected the US would begin at either the north of south end and work island-by-island; the US instead attacked in the middle, at Kwajalein, surprising the enemy. Thick vegetation prevented US intelligence from an effective pre-invasion mapping program, and the attack was preceded with a heavy naval bombardment. Organized Japanese resistance was slight on some islands and deadly on others. But the battle for the Marshalls was relatively easy and quick, given prior military estimates. This publication includes some great maps showing the Pacific Theater, the Marshall and Gilbert Islands, the Kwajalein Atoll, Southern Kwajalein, and the Eniwetok Atoll. This publication, which contains 26 pages, is in excellent, virtual mint, condition. There are no rips or tears, no writing or markings, no spills or smears, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place. Images sell!
