FROM THE BONOMS ARCHIVE: IN REGARDS TO THE SALE OF A SCULPTURE MATCHING THIS CHARMA rare 'Alfred the Penguin' by Jacques Cartier, French 1925-1929,designed by the renowned sculptor Jacques Cartier, created in the workshop of Henri Rouard Paris signed Jacques Cartier and numbered 80 to the rear of the base, with 'depose' stamping and the workshop H. Rouard in nickel-silver plated bronze and gunmetal with original neck tag with Alain Saint-Ogan logo stamped on both sides, in exceptionally fine original condition mounted on a display wooden base, offered for sale with a photocopy of the original French publicity advertisement, a child's book 'Alfred The Flying Penguin', French text) and a soft toy, the mascot 5in high. “Alfred the Penguin” was a popular cartoon character in the French Sunday paper “Zig et Puce” created by Alain de Saint-Ogan” and he was originally fitted to the car as a charm to ward off evil spirits on the roads, Charles Linbergh even had an Alfred charm in his plane “Spirit of Saint-Louis” for his solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s was marketed as a good luck mascot in the Cartier showroom, and produced by Henri Rouard at 10/12 rue de l’asile, Popincourt, Paris from 1925-1929 at a very expensive price then of 260 French Francs. In addition, CARTIER produced charms very similar in style and material during this time period. (notably for Snow White)There are several examples online that depict cartoon characters, a few have no/almost no signature due to the thin soft construction.
