Description: This wonderful four-panel folding wooden screen makes for a very elegant room divider. The Japanese woodwork art of Kumiko is a precise method of assembling wood pieces without glue or nails, where individual slats are cut and fitted together using a saw, hand plane, or chisel. The screen folds easily, and has been cleaned and lightly polished. The screen is in excellent condition and wear is consistent with age and use. However, there is a single panel missing from the screen that will need to be replaced. This art form that was developed circa 600 AD and has traditionally been used in wall hangings and room dividers. The designs for Kumiko pieces aren’t chosen randomly. In fact, many have been around since the Edo era (1603-1868). The designs are not just pretty, they are also to distribute light and wind in a calming way and each design has a meaning or is mimicking a pattern in nature that is thought to be a good omen.
